| Last weekend I decided that my exhaust had been sitting in the garage far too long and I needed to put it in. I had originally planned to get Pitstop Performance to put everything in for me, but decided it would be most rewarding and fun to put stuff on myself (minus suspension). So, I did. Starting with the exhaust. Oh, and I've got a 2+2 and got the Labree X-Pipe w/ resonators. Sunday afternoon I went over to a friends house and we got on it. Jacked it up, no problem. WD-40'd everything. All set. 17 mm socket? Check. Creeper? I wish :( We got the rear of the car up enough that we could slide in and out with ease and started getting the old exhaust off. Everything went smoothly, until one of the bolts on the cats snapped in half :( We had to drill it out, which thankfully worked very good. After smoothing out the threads, we prepped the new exhaust. We started off following the instructions from the site, but it was simple enough that we didn't need em. When we had the old exhaust off from the cats on I couldn't resist and started her up. WOOOOOOOOO damn. It sounded awesome running just the cats. So awesome I've been looking into electric cutouts. While this would kill the backpressure for the NA, it just sounds.... awesome. It wasn't too incredibly loud (for not having a muffler or anything), but my friend on the ground had to cover his ears when I revved it. It sounded DAMN mean and aggressive. *Sigh*, why do we need all that piping anyways? Damn laws. Hah, well after that was over with we got back under to pop the new one on. Went on easy for the most part, however we came across one problem. We couldn't get both sides to sit even. We adjusted and readjusted, gently bent hangers, moved things, etc etc. I finally gave up for the time and let the right side sit about an inch lower. It's not noticable unless you're staring, but I think i'll try to fix that next weekend. Any tips?? Also, the exhaust seems to hit the gas shield/pan/whatever at slower speeds sometimes, I'm going to have to bang that thing back over. First driving impressions: Idle has a nice deep burble when you start it up, but is relatively quiet - from inside the car, anyways, Driving off at low rpms sounds pretty deep from behind it. There seems to be a bit of drone in the 2k range - but as of now I can barely hear it. With music on I can't tell its there at all, not sure if I've just gotten used to it though... but its not bad at all. When you punch it you get a good growl but nothing too loud inside the car. Until then, its not much louder than stock. If you're not driving it hard you barely notice it. However, outside the car is a different story. I'm glad I got the resonators, it would have been obscenely loud otherwise. It seems toned down as well. It's decently loud from the outside, and when you punch it it sounds damn good... I now see where people get the "supercar" sound reference. Not incredibly deep, but not high and rattley either. I like it... a lot. I would definately recommend it. Powerwise, I feel a little bit of difference in the upper RPMs but nothing drastic. Decent for an NA upgrade. Now for some pictures: (it was a bright day) Be prepared. This is probably the dirtiest Z you will ever see - I gave it a good wash today though, so it really shines now :)
Underneath, stock parts...
Jacked up
CLEAN! With the new exhaust.
Old stock system And some videos: (tell me if these don't work, I couldn't find anyplace to host...) Stock
Running just the cats, OH SO SEXY! The Labree! :) Driveby - A quick driveby, but i let off the gas cause I was in a development haha didn't want to annoy too many people.. Driving off - Driving off about a mile away... can still hear it! Damn its rewarding working on your own car! I don't know what I was thinkin.
